Meet Debbie Vacha: Working Professional, Mother, Wife, and Soon-to-be-MBA-Student. In between her multitude of responsibilities, Debbie was kind enough to make some time to tell us why she is pursuing her MBA, why she chose to do so at Midland, and how she feels as she embarks upon her MBA studies.

What made you decide to pursue an MBA degree? Is there something particularly appealing/enticing about an MBA degree versus the various other types of graduate programs available?

"I have long considered going back to school, but, what can I say, life happens. Right now is a time in my life when my children are no longer babies and yet they are not in high school, either. So, now is the time for me to pursue my MBA. I currently work for a company that is located in Fremont that also has ties overseas. My direct supervisor lives in Holland, and I have a tremendous responsibility to him, the company, and myself to further my education and then to bring that education to my position. I believe that the MBA covers a broad overview of what it takes to run a successful business, and that is exactly what I need to move forward in my career."

Why did you choose Midland? Were there particular aspects (hybrid delivery model, proximity to home and/or work, flexibility, cost, program duration, etc.) that made Midland stand out from other options? Also, why now (in terms of personal and/or professional reasons)?

"Why Midland? That is a full question. Over the last five years, I have become more acquainted with Midland for many reasons.  My family and I have become involved in watching the Midland Warriors.  Our daughter has become involved in the Fremont Soccer program, and we have enjoyed the involvement of the Midland soccer athletes. With that said, as I learned more about Midland, I began looking into the educational side. About a year ago, I actually contacted Midland to ask about an MBA program. Unfortunately, at that time, there was no such option. I was lucky enough about 6 months ago to get an email telling me that Midland was working on an MBA program. There are several reasons why I chose Midland. First, the involvement that I felt from the Midland administration was so welcoming. They were as excited as I was and so helpful. That means quite a lot to have the one-on-one attention.  Midland is close to my home, and I really wanted to go to work. The hybrid, 16-month program was perfect. I am married, have two children, serve on the board of education for Cedar Bluffs School, and am currently taking care of two companies. I didn’t want to take 4 or 5 years to get my MBA slowly."

What are your life and/or career goals that you believe pursuing your MBA at Midland will help you accomplish?

"I currently work for a company that is located in Fremont. I have been with them for ten years, and our owner and managing partner is located overseas. I want to be able to take over more responsibilities and move forward in my position. We just recently started a new company, and I was involved with that one from the drawing board. Now that I have some really relevant experiences and some clear opportunities for promotion, there is no better time to pursue my MBA than now."

What are you most excited about in terms of pursuing your MBA at Midland?

"I am excited about the classes, specifically the knowledge that I will absorb and be able to use in my future career."

What are your chief concerns regarding pursuing your MBA at Midland?

"I think that every mother’s biggest concern is time: time for school and time for your family. I have an incredible support system from my family and my work. Without that support, it would be very hard. But, I do love a challenge! I hope that when I do receive my MBA, other mothers will look at me and see that it is never too late to reach for your goals and succeed."

What personal, professional, and/or academic background/credentials/experience do you feel make you a unique member of Midland MBA's first class of students?

"Personally, I feel that I am unique in that I am a wife, mom, and have a full time job. I think that, sometimes, women need to remember to take time for themselves. We are only making ourselves better, stronger, and role models for our children. Professionally, I have been extremely fortunate to engage in the career that I currently have. It took hard work, but I have made a place for myself in a wonderful and unique company. I could have an easier, less stressful life, but I am the person I am because of the obstacles that I won’t let stand in my way. Academically, I have my bachelors in Finance from UNL and was very proud when I received that. But, I have always wanted to go to the next step and so excited that Midland is where that is all going to happen."

Anything else that you would like to add?

"Can’t wait to get started……and stay tuned."
